An introduction via UPPERCASE Magazine
In late 2023, I was slowly setting up my sewing space; gathering notions, fabric, tools, quilt books - all in an effort to re-stock what had been.

I received a copy of UPPERCASE Magazine, the Surface Pattern Design issue caught my attention. The special issue (published every two years) features the best in up-and-coming and seasoned surface pattern designers. The 2023 issue introduced me to Pattern Design and was instrumental in inspiring me to begin this journey. Special thanks to Janine for her tireless work in assembling such beautiful and informative publications.
Janine Vangool is the publisher, editor and designer of UPPERCASE. Her magazine and books celebrate the process of making, the commitment to craft and the art of living creatively. The current Issue No. 65, April-May-June 2025 is available now. Past editions of the guide are sold out. If you've ever dreamed about having your own fabric line, then the 6th edition of the UPPERCASE Surface Pattern Design Guide offers much inspiration and information!
From the website: This issue is a must-have guide for artists curious about surface pattern design - it's a creative pursuit that encompasses art-making, illustration, design and entrepreneurship! There are 100 portfolios from new and seasoned designers, plus many experts sharing their tips. So much beauty, inspiration and wisdom is within these pages. Please subscribe, renew or purchase a single copy of this issue to add to your professional library.
Patterns are applied to the surfaces of our daily lives. From fabrics, clothing, papergoods, wallpaper and our furniture, there are dimensions of surface pattern design. It's a form of creative expression and personal style, and, as shown in the sixth edition of the UPPERCASE Surface Pattern Design Guide, it can become an encompassing career.
The truth is, while many things may have been done in the fabric design, they haven't been done by you. Your perspective, your voice, and your creative spirit are needed, and there's more than enough room. ~ Bonnie Christine
My journey continues today . . .
While writing my "Charm Pack of Short Stories", I determined that an accompanying charm pack of fabric would make my healing project complete. I felt that I was in the right lane to continue on my creative journey so I persevered.
I had a handful of late night hours each week to do something for me. I began to doodle and sketch, using the dining room window (on the weekend) as a light box. I signed up for dozens of free online tutorials and listened to several podcasts - all in an effort to continue learning new things. I followed five creatives who shared handy tips, tutorials, checklists, techniques, classes, portfolios, patterns from the past, and links to their mentors.
Then, in January 2025, I created my very first repeating pattern - from a super-simple doodle into a multi-directional design:
I had a basic understanding and could finally pull from my categories of designs that I'd been creating for the past few years. A plan, a path, all so positive!
In upcoming blogs, I will share what it's been like moving from the on-ramp to feeling secure in the slow lane. Then, finding an opening and signaling a move to join the flow from beginner to intermediate. Identifying four passions, defining and designing for each of those - all while determining my signature style. It has been an adventure! I've got the hi-beams on, still guiding me through my late-night journey - and I'm enjoying the ride.
Thank you for stopping by.
