Rita's Quilt - States & Stars
ESTATE SALE: UNFINISHED QUILT
A LIFELONG QUILTER DIED BEFORE COMPLETING GORGEOUS U.S. MAP PROJECT
For those not following along in Instagram, Shannon Downey has posted the following:
"I haven’t really cried about #RitasQuilt because I just find so much joy and excitement in it that tears aren’t my body’s reaction to this. That said, I did not expect the letters, notes, and gifts that the stitchers sent me and this morning as I sorted through them so I could inventory where we are at, I was reading these cards and I bawled. This is such a gorgeous group of humans. Look at their artistry!!!! I’m literally in awe. They are so much better than I even dared to imagine. 😭😭😭. I will sort out and share the stars as soon as I figure out how I’m going to catalog them. The stars are incredible. Each artist brought something unique and special to their stars. This quilt is going to be breathtaking. I’ve never felt quite this overwhelmed and so full of hope. We can do anything. I have never believed that so hard. Madly in love with all of you. Thank you." —————————- #ritasquilt #states #embroidery #craftivism #craftivist #feminism #feminist #quilting #stitchersofinstagram #badasscrossstitch #community
And, here is Shannon's update on the stars:
"Shout out to today’s volunteers @irishmonarchy and @rosemermaids who are in my home helping me wash and block what feels like 10 million squares. I have never felt this level of pressure. The embroidery work is so gorgeous I can’t stand it. We are holding our breath while we work with these. This is going to take 24 hours lol. We all agree that Rita is laughing at us right now."
It is such a special way to honor Rita Smith by completing her 50 State Hexagon Quilt. A loving story -- one where Shannon Downey, the 100 embroiderers and 30 quilters are becoming part of the quilt's history.
